Title: AOK Forum - The Prop Den
Post by: NoHumorMan on June 07, 2007, 04:23:21 PM
Making this new thread as the old one was turned into *report server and mysql error* thread.

I'm having an occurrence with my forum.  Have some parts set to *private (hidden)* and accept members to access those areas once they have filled a certain quota.  However, I have learned that even thought I have updated their profile permissions to *Allowed Access* that they still cannot view the section.

What can cause this?  Should I ask them to clear their cache or how can I fix this or is it a bug in the system?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

When pressing the "profile" button under a members post I get this message:

Sorry, This is error 404. Back to freeforum.ca forums. If you believe that you just typed a forum url correctly, please try access the forum via subdomain. For instance: Free Forum Hosting (http://forumname.aokforums.com/) instead of http://www.aokforums.com/forumname/forumname.html or http://www.aokforums.com/forumname/index.php?mforum=forumname.

It seems to work fine for me. Can you tell me the usernames/members that you can view their profile? Thanks.

Yeah... it works fine today.  I'll write again if it occurs again and will also write where and the user it failed to work with.

Thanks.

A new thing I noticed today.  When doing a quick edit after having posted the message it now says I can't post so quickly - the flood interval thing - but that previously did not pop up when doing edits, no matter how quickly the edit was made after the post was posted.

Seems like a glitch to me.

I apologize for any inconvenience, it's not a glitch, we setup flood interval for all forums to prevent post flood, please wait a few seconds then post next messages.

Thanks.

I already had flood-interval installed, so why was this implemented so it messes with the edit option?  I wanna be able to edit fast and post it quickly after I posted the message, if I need it.  And this flood-interval thing doesn't appear to affect your edit function in this here forum.

And another issue: One of my users has reported that he can't post when posting in Safari.  He sent a link to what he gets when posting, though, not sure if that's the actual error message he gets, still waiting on confirmation on that:

The Prop Den :: (http://thepropden.aokforums.com/posting.php)

The user is Hedjii72

I don't want any systems preventing my users to post.

Title: AOK Forum - The Prop Den
Post by: NoHumorMan on June 25, 2007, 02:55:36 PM
It worked.

For another thing: is it possible to implement a feature that makes it impossible for a user to edit his post after someone has made a reply to his post, to prevent people from later going back and erasing what they've said?

As long as no one has replied it is okay to edit, but not after.  To keep things from getting edited away later.

This feature should not affect the mods or administrator, who'd be able to edit all posts.

Or is such a feature too complicated?

Let me know.

Just a quick question: how is the security against hackers specifically targeting a forum?  Are there any security features in place?

What format is the .bak back-up file? zip, gzip, bzip2?  Just for future reference.

Thanks.

Is it possible to add a name feature, as I've seen on another forum, encircled in the picture below, as I've had problems remembering people's names because of the increase in members.

QuoteJust a quick question: how is the security against hackers specifically targeting a forum? Are there any security features in place?
If we are to be honest no forum software is fully protected from the exploits constantly developed by hackers but we will to try our best to protect your forum. You should back up your site at least once a month.
QuoteWhat format is the .bak back-up file? zip, gzip, bzip2?  Just for future reference.
The backup files are encrypted to secure data.

Yes, but is it possible to get to know what kind of encryption.  Is it any of those encryption types listed in the previous post of something else?

The backup file is not in zip, gzip or bzip2 formats. For instance if you're making some kind of change to settings in an application, it might make a .bak file which will let you restore your previous settings.
QuoteIs it possible to add a name feature, as I've seen on another forum, encircled in the picture below, as I've had problems remembering people's names because of the increase in members.

Sorry, we do not offer this because we must edit the source code ,templates and database to install it.

That's okay about the name feature... just saw it on another forum and thought I'd ask.

Please be careful.  If it can't be restored without having to restore the whole forum, then please don't try it.  Cheers.

I'm done.  I can't possibly copy and paste that whole topic and conversation to my forum - it's a too long topic.  Unless it can be moved in its entirety, with the posts and posters intact I no longer have no use of it.  But thanks anyway.

He tried someone's else's computer and had full access, so it is his IP address at home that is the problem.

Just strange that it wasn't on the ban list... as that would've seemed to be the most logic choice for what is wrong. :(

Just got this message from one of my users:

QuoteIs the den loading all screwy for anyone besides me?

I dont get a background to show, and none of the buttons or icons ever load. The text is all big, and most of the time the board just doesnt show up. Like I couldnt get on over there at all yesterday.

Just wondering if this is some freak occurance?

This is what I get:

And a few others reported similar problems.  I have no clue what's going on.  I get this page sometimes, but rarely, and a simple click on the refresh button usually solves it... or the forum goes dead, which means I have to wait until it returns.

Thanks again.

Have had several people complain about this lately.

Cool.  Hope you like what you're seeing. :)

Problem with sporadic errors like these is that you have to be on the forum a lot to witness how much they can disrupt.  What makes it even worse is that they seem to not affect all at the same time.  So I report them as soon as I spot them to give the support a general idea of when they are showing so they may find a pattern or a glitch that can be pinned and fixed.

So, a big thanks to the support for all their work so far.

Have been experiencing some non-loading of the forum today... some minor... just now a longer span about half an hour to an hour where it was impossible to access the forum at all.

Seems to be working now... but just thought I'd let you know.

Thanks.  Forum has been working a lot better lately.  Still a few times where the forum won't load, but nothing major.

Are still having problems with the reply thing, where once you submit your reply it goes to a white page and you are unable to submit your reply to the forum.  A few people have complained about losing long replies because of this error having to rewrite the reply again from memory later.

Well, I've made a post about having people write a pm to us when they experience the problem, so we'll know how many are affected and who and I'll pass on the information to you in a pm when I get it.

All users are using the fantastic theme/style.

Up until 2 days ago the forum was running smoothly, then it got slow and today has been especially slow.

A user named firebladejedi has experienced a constant slowness to the forum, even at times when the forum is running smoothly, so I thought I'd forward his name in case there was something with his access or something.

Cheers.

yes I (SithLord) still cannot access the forum for a few days now from my home computer. I've tried different browsers (Safari, Netscape, Firefox), I've tried clearing caches, I've tried deleting cookies, and I'm on a Mac with OS 10.4. I have no problem accessing from my work computer. It's happened before that my IP address was specifically locked out of the forum and I think it's happened again. It doesn't matter if I access from a Google search of the Prop Den or from a direct bookmarked link....all I get, no matter what page I try to access or what forum, is a blank page. It loads as a blank and it completes the loading. There's no message, there's no redirection to another page as before. Just blank.

This is not a bug or a problem, phpBB did check his session for secure reason, he just need to logout then login and post again. He might write the post too long and accidentally post it with session expired. I suggest you increase the number of seconds that sessions expired from your Administration Control Panel.

The session length is currently set to 3600 seconds.  What would be a recommended increased setting?

And session length, is that from the time you start the reply until you submit it?

Still haven't heard back.

Though, Defstartrooper lost a post when the forum went white - what we've nicknamed the "white-page syndrome".  Usually we are able to hit the back button on the browser and be able to copy and paste the message, open a new browser window, access the forum and the thread and then post it.  However that didn't work and the post was lost.  Has there been any development in figuring out what is causing this problem?

Also, in general properties, at least three options are listed twice.  Where can I change all these things, so they are correct?

So there must be a setting somewhere else that is activated to start user from the bottom of the forum page instead of the top.

Usually you can write a link like this:

But now it doesn't work.  Doesn't even show anything.  No matter what type of link or URL I try to do in a post, using the URL button, doesn't show up or work now. :(

Just a quick question.  We are using the Blue Moon template/theme/skin and was just wondering whether it would be possible to switch the "read" / "new posts" buttons on the frontpage, so that "read" becomes matt blue and "new posts" becomes dark blue?  Reverse of what it is now.

How it currently is:

I take it this can be edited in the theme in the admin control panel, but I'm not sure where.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,

Need some help please.  The Prop Den is extremley slow and over the last couple of days it can kick you off the forum.  Out of the few Star Wars forums around it is by far the most tempermental.

I'm still getting to grips with technology but the users are beginning to complain.  One minute it loads fine the next it take's an age to do anything.  Just need some help in figuring out why is it this way and can it be solved.

I'm still getting to grips with technology but the users are beginning to complain.  One minute it loads fine the next it take's an age to do anything.  Just need some help in figuring out why is it this way and can it be solved.

Thanks in advance.

I will take care of it.

Thank you for report it.

Sorry me again.

I sent a mass email to the members of the forum. It seems most from what I gather received it, however, one member in particular has not received it and I sent him 2 messages just to check the system.

Do you happen to know why he would not receive the mass email? We have over 650 members and they haven't all clarified they received it or not but for now It would be good to have a reason for the message not delivery to some people if that is the case. I did mention to check their spam folders just in case.

Hello, the forum is running very slow again.  When you fixed it the other day it was great for half the day and back to running slow off and on over the last few days.

Could this please be looked into again.

Hello..
The PropDen has violated the TOS by posting pics owned by me and now posting pics of a recently deceased friend that they are bashing..I have asked the Adim DarthVaderV to remove said posts to no reply...

I could not report this in the report forum section for what ever reason..
I ask this be taken care of ASAP

One of my members is getting this error message whenever he sends a PM.

And after sending a PM, the PM system reverts back to "last sent message" rather than "inbox", like it used to do.

Is there any way to change that?

Thanks in advance.

Forum is running slow but other than that my question is I changed the avatar sizes in the ACP but they kept on reverting back to their normal size after the changes were submitted.   I did this 3 times and it went back to the standard size of 90 x 200.  I tried to switch it to 90 x 90 and 90 x 120 but it's not working.  We never used to have avatar sizes as big as 200 and some members are complaining.

I know it's a small point but I want to get it sorted.  Thanks in advance.

I heard that avatar sizes shouldn't be set to 90x90 but they in fact used to be the below:

The minimum size 50 x 50
The Maximum size 150 x 150.

I have tried to change them myself but can't, if you could make those adjustments to the above settings I would be grateful.  Thanks.

Hi,

Please check your email whether it is right first.
Some webmail services will lock your IP if there are so much mail is sent from your site. Example, some members spam your subscribed threads.

Can you give me some webmail domain (@gmail.com or @hotmail.com or ....). If you have specific email, you should send me PM.

We'll check this problem.

Can I ask one more question,  is it possible to have it so double posts merge into the one post?  I know you can on licensed vBulletin,  but so far there hasn't been much that this version couldn't do.

Hi,

Do you want to talk about "Merge Double Post"?
Maybes, it's a little difficult when install it for phpBB. :smiley-frown:
I'll try to check it.

Hi,

What do you think about Anti Double Posts (http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=1054155) for phpBB3?
Is it necessary or not?

It's too hard to determine.
I'm thinking about it.

It's not so much a necessity as it is extremely handy.

Essentially if someone posts,  then posts again,  it will automatically edit the prior post and add it in,  rather than create a whole new post.

It is easy to just click on 'edit',  but what if you're quoting 2 different people...that's when you'd have to quote,  copy the quote,  back out,  edit the last post and paste the quote,  whereas it could automatically edit the post prior.

Free Forum Hosting (http://enigmaticparadigm.forummate.com/gaming-twitter-vt64.html)

Look at post 4 where I quote 2 seperate users.  that should be the outcome when you post directly after your own post.

You can multi quote from the reply box, by scrolling down the page you will see the last 10 replies made in the same thread, all have the quote icon you can click on.

IMHO I can't see this mod being of that much use + its for 3.0.1,3.0.2 and 3.0.6 versions.

Yes,  you were quite right about that.  Thanks for pointing that out.

If I can get another piece of help,  just how much customisation can we actually do to the free forum.  I feel i'm reaching a point where my creativity is being limited ie forum icons, colours, layouts.

One particular thing i'm after,  is seeing the last topic posted,  just above the name of the last poster when viewing the main forum.  For example,  my gaming board has sub boards,  but it only tells me who posted last,  and not what they posted in, without me going in and finding their post.  I also think it would just give the forum a little more visual appeal.

Thanks again for all your help.

A agree with you on the last post topic title scotty, a forum i visit often has just had it installed and it does make finding posts a lot easier.

Don't know if it will work ok here as we are now on version 3.0.9 and the mod is for 3.0.8.....maybe Tanduy or Kimgold could check

Adding my thanks to tanduy,  and to Paul.....NP

EDIT:  Random request:

In the image folder other_images,  i've been able to find images suitable to define my forum boards perfectly,  but would it be possible to get a playstation console icon (not the company symbol) and an xbox console (again,  not the symbol).  I'm only hoping this is possible as it already contains a nice PC icon,  N64 icon, gameboy advance icon, and i'm hoping there'll be nice little icons for the other consoles (maybe even retro hardware like atari).

Thanks in advance and I hope this is something that is already in motion as the images i've gotten tonight,  were not there when I signed up.

Cheers, guys.

I was going to do this initially,  but the icons in the other_images folder,  are so crisp and clean while also nicely detailed.  I can only assume they come from the same place.

Are you able to see if there is a playstation/xbox/wii icon in the place where they came from?

If not,  i'll do some hunting and perhaps consider creating icons from scratch.

New issue has arrived.  The BBC3 box has stopped working.  I think it's been updated and has an issue with nwo_red.  It no longer shows the grey box with all the formatting/video/image options.

Man,  is there anywhere to view the banned words list?

I was trying to respond to a member's PM,  and no matter how many times I hit submit it kept saying it had banned words and my warning count was going up by 1.

Is it possible for me to see just what was so wrong?  It was the username I also use here (i don't use the admin account to post general stuff).

Also, does the warning count reset over time, at all?  Kinda hate to have my main account sitting on death row, waiting for a single mistake.

EDIT:  Crap!!  I thought it might be a glitch so I tried a PM with every kind of offensive word I can think of (as a test) and it went through fine.  So I retried the PM from earlier and it banned me,  and because I am also the admin,  well i've essentially lost access to my site now.

I spamming or anything like that.  I really need to know what it was flagging.  Could someone please tell me.  Thanks.

Quote from: tanduy2506;539306No, we can't provide "Word Filters" for you.

No i can't.  It wouldn't tell me what it was picking up on,  for all I know it was picking up on a word in between 2 words.  It should've been saying what the word detected was,  so I could take it out.

I edited and resubmitted 8 times,  till I was banned and by the end of it,  it didn't contain a single offensive term.

QuoteI checked MultiForums Admin and found your IP in our IPs Ban.

I'm still unable to access it at the moment

[quote[That's why you can access your forum from your IP[/quote]

I assume you mean 'can't' access your forum,  and I understand that.

QuoteHow many times did you have banned words?

8 times from the same post.  Though again,  it's hard for me to even see 8 bannable words because I didnt' know what they were,  and i've have similar exchanges with my members already,  which made it even more confusing.

QuoteIf someone have banned words in their posts, they will be banned.

I completely agree that rules need to be enforced,  but those same rules need to tell the offender where they've gone wrong.

The police can't fine you for speeding without indicating that you were doing 50 in a 40 zone or something similar.

The warning just kept saying I had a banned word.  Nothing more.  Now considering the PM was about 300 words,  how do I find the banned word when it isn't highlighted or even mentioned?

What if the banned word was 'hentai',  and I had a friend Cohen Tail...  your censor would pick up the word hentai with a space between it and flag it.  I would never think that my friends name is offensive,  and i'd never think to change it.

If you can't release the word list,  I understand,  but it's really unfair to not know why you've tripped the censor,  especially when you clean it up to the point that it's safe for children to read (and barely conveys the original message as I intended),  and you get banned as a result.

But I guess for now,  the more pressing issue is that I cannot access my forum at this moment.

Okay,  I appreciate that my forum is back (cleared my cookies and now it works,  though I don't know if that actually fixed it as opposed to Tanduy doing something extra for me :) )

But we really need some way to have posters correct their errors with these banned words.

As i said,  when that issue was happening with the PM,  I sent another PM with every offensive word I could think of (as a test) and it wasn't flagged,  which left me even more confused.

All can ask is this.

1.  Can we see the banned words list or have it in our Admin Control panel (i know this one is probably no,  but that's fine)

2.  Could we have some sort of specific indication of the breach,  rather than 'banned word found',  which could be any collection of letters for all we know.  Better yet,  how about at least narrowing it down to something like 'line 4 of your message contained a banned word.

3.  Lastly,  and most importantly,  how long do the warnings last.  I'd like to hope that time away from anything remotely offensive,  would reset the warning count.

thanks, guys.

Hi mate,

Quote8 times from the same post.  Though again,  it's hard for me to even see  8 bannable words because I didnt' know what they were,  and i've have  similar exchanges with my members already,  which made it even more  confusing.
I checked the "Word Filter" of MultiForums Admin.
Bad Submission Limit Per Day is 10 (The limit that users will be banned by "IPs Ban" automatically if number of bad submission detected messages they get reach it.)
So, you was banned.
I just want to let you know that:
Quote"Word Filter" helps us to deter new spam forums spam and new spam accounts/posts on hosted forums.         If users try to submit content have filtered words that are described in "Filtered Words" (we call "bad submission"), they will get bad submission detected message and can be banned if reach bad submission limit.
I think you said it right
QuoteI completely agree that rules need to be enforced,  but those same rules need to tell the offender where they've gone wrong.

But that is a feature of echoPHP phpBB MultiForums (http://www.echophp.com/). I have no idea.
QuoteWhat if the banned word was 'hentai',  and I had a friend Cohen Tail...   your censor would pick up the word hentai with a space between it and  flag it.

We're trying to check that problem.

Quote1.  Can we see the banned words list or have it in our Admin  Control panel (i know this one is probably no,  but that's  fine)
So sorry that we don't provide "Filtered Words". It will get more trouble if spammers know it.
Quote2.  Could we have some sort of specific indication of the breach,    rather than 'banned word found',  which could be any collection of   letters for all we know.  Better yet,  how about at least narrowing it   down to something like 'line 4 of your message contained a banned  word.
I'll discuss more with the Support Team. I think there is  no way to customize it.
Quote3.  Lastly,  and most importantly,  how long do the warnings  last.  I'd  like to hope that time away from anything remotely  offensive,  would  reset the warning count.
As I said, it's unrelated phpBB.
If the number of bad submission detected messages you get reach it which is over "Bad Submission Limit Per Day", you'll be banned.

I really hope you understand.
P/S: I also PM to you, please check it.

Thank you for a thorough response,  and in the absence of the banned words list being available me to,  you have made the conditions per day,  very clear.

For that I thank you.  As to the Cohen Tail word,  I was just saying that if Hentai was a banned word,  it would be picked up.  Cohen Tail isn't a word I use at all,  so we have no problems there.

I was only mentioning it because it was so confusing to have my PM flagged over and over,  when it contained nothing offensive,  no spam and by the end of of it had nothing close to a swear word.

Either way,  i'm at least pleased that if I get flagged for a banned word,  I just need to skip that PM or post,  and 24hrs later the count will reset.  I'm happy with that.

Maybe, you misunderstood :smiley-laughing:
If someone is banned by MultiForums, it won't reset after 24hrs as you think.

I've checked and removed your IP from IP Bans list :smiley-frown:
I know that's a little inconvenience but it's must like that to prevent our system.

Do you have any idea?

Oh don't worry. I didn't misunderstand.  I meant if I don't get 10 warnings ie I don't get banned,  and I lay low for 24hrs,  the count will reset back to 0.

You said 10 warning per day, right?

As to any ideas,  It's a really hard thing to control.  You need banned words to prevent spamming.......but that works against those that aren't spamming at all.

Probably best if you can at least see more than the fact that a person is banned,  so you can make the call to reinstate the account or not.

The cohen tail thing is fine.  It was just an example.

And by account,  I mean their username.  But IP bans are just doing the same thing.  Either way,  the account can't be used when it happens.

For now though, Tanduy.  Everthing is fine,  so let's keep looking at ways to improve our forums.

Ok guys,  i'm in a real pickle here and I feel like i'm throwing money down the toilet right now.

First,  I buy 25000 impressions worth of ad free.........  nothing happened.  Ads remain.  I have no clue where to check my impressions.

Then I stupidly thought that buying my own domain,  would be another way to get ad free,  so I buy my forum's .com equivalent,  then go through the upgrade process..........again,  nothing.

So far i've spent 40 dollars and have seen nothing for it.  I've seen posts explaining how to park the domain,  yet when I got into ACP > General > Upgrade Management,  I see nothing but the purchases i've made.  There is no configure button,  or options.

So if you could clear it up, absolute.  Will parking my own domain make it ad free?  And how in the hell do I associate my new domain with the site.

Hope to hear from you soon.

I did point the name servers to:

ns1.gladhost.com
ns2.gladhost.com

on my domain provider,  but I got that information from the phpNuke side of things.  Not sure if it applies to phpBB.  Can't find anything specific that says to do the same thing with phpBB.

Even then,  how do I configure my forum,  to point at the domain address?  I can't find any sort of option for it.

I did a mass email test to just myself and did get the mail without that error.

That's true.  There has always been an issue with pm notifications and notifications in general sent to users' private mails.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I'll try the mail thing again - this time I'll try without checking the "send immediately" option, as that may be why it's going nuts, seeing as we have a lot of members.
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den
Post by: NoHumorMan on September 26, 2012, 04:01:41 PM
We have 1495 registered users.  If accounts with inactive e-mail addresses are affecting the mass-e-mail option, is there a way to get it to ignore accounts with e-mails that are not working anymore and then still send to everyone else?

I haven't received a forum e-mail from when I sent out a mass e-mail several hours ago, so I assume it didn't help to uncheck that "send immediately" option.  If the inactive e-mails is the reason, then our mass e-mail is blocked from working unless we send out pr individual user and that sorta removes the point of mass e-mailing.

Thanks for the update.  Much appreciated.  Hope this can be worked out or a way to detect accounts with e-mail addresses that are no longer active, so they can be blocked from the mass e-mail option, while the account is sent a private message to change their account e-mail address to a working one by the forum staff.

How are things going with figuring things out and getting the hang of things?  Hopefully good.

Still hoping that there'll be a possible mod or fix that will weed out those with an inactive e-mail address regarding the mass e-mail option.  A feature within the administration panel - similar to that of inactive accounts - would be interesting if a similar list could be generated with the member accounts that have an inactive e-mail address in their account, so we can easily find them and send them private messages regarding updating their profile with current and functional information.

Thanks.  Haven't had a chance to test it on a spammer yet.

The forum is currently running really slow, but I noticed it's the same on this forum, so I take it it is a general thing affecting all the forums, as the support forum are usually not affected when our forum is.

Users' Forum Permissions and groups' Forum Permissions doesn't work together.  When assigning permissions to a specific group of members such as registered users, it does not apply those permission to the individual user permissions profile and we will have to go in and edit those individually... and that's a lot with a 1582 member base.

Is there any way these two can be synchronized so that you can be sure that the group permissions get applied to the individual user permissions on how they view the forum?

We still have the issue that non-staff members can view our hidden, staff only sections, no matter how much we mess with the permissions.  The phpBB3 permission settings are so complex that it isn't enough just to fix the settings once, you have to go in to each user's account and fix settings and with as many users that we have it is getting impossible to manage.  Maybe we are doing it wrong, but when we set a section to admin only, then that should be for admin only and should override all other settings everywhere and in all accounts, and only allow those who are set as admin to be able to view.

How do we make this happen, because we've heard from several now that they can view the section, even though they are not supposed to.
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den
Post by: NoHumorMan on August 17, 2013, 11:46:44 AM
Any help on this would be appreciated, as our security isn't secure when regular members can view out hidden sections even though the permission settings show that they shouldn't be able to.  When checking a user's permissions it also doesn't show that they can see those sections, but we get notices from several members that they can in fact both view and browse the section, but mostly report that they cannot read the threads.  This is a serious security breach that we simply cannot figure out how to fix.

I am not an expert on phpBB permissions I would try asking on phpbb.com if there is a flaw with our system I will look into it and fix it.
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den
Post by: NoHumorMan on January 26, 2014, 11:12:40 AM
Having just asked on the phpBB support forum they think the issue lies with the system you are using.  After having digged a bit more into the issue the users in question doesn't appear to be able to view the hidden forums on the main page, but can read the titles of the posts from those sections in the View Active Posts option in the top left corner under the banner.  According to our permission settings users with No Access shouldn't be able to view posts from those sections in that active topics list, so somewhere lies a glitch that makes that possible.  I will work with them some more to prune our permission settings to make it perfect and if the issue still happens they would like you to contact them on their support forum in the thread I made there.

Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den

From what I understood, then the issue must originate from phpbb-seo.com as posts or thread titles from hidden sections shouldn't be visible in the active topics list, according to phpbb.com, but I haven't had a reply from the -seo service yet.  Maybe you'll have more luck, or perhaps switch the service.

Could you also inquire why they felt the need to make a simple, functional system that worked into the most head scratching complex mess where the same feature can be corrected from 6 different sections of the Admin Panel and where you can never be sure what's messing with what?  The previous system was so easy to figure out and operate... this is like a nightmare.
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den

The phpbb-seo support has a suggestion for a possible fix that sounds rather invasive, but can you look into it?  This issue is getting really annoying.

Or, you could switch to the actual phpbb.com service and escape oddities in the software.
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den

Besides the permission security issue, we also have a problem with mass e-mails.  When we try to send those to alert our members of things happening on the forum it just blanks out.  It refuses to send them.  Can this be looked at?  We probably have many "dead" e-mails, but how can we get the system to ignore those when it finds them and then send e-mails out to the rest?  If it could then sort the members with dead e-mail addresses in a list, so we can find out who they are and potentially contact them in other ways to get them to change the dead e-mail address with a valid, functional one?

The highlighted post should not be visible to anyone in the active post list.  They cannot access the post, but they can read the title.  But even that is too much info sometimes.

Both the section highlighted below - The Board Staff Lounge - as well as the other staff section - The Mod Squad - has post titles showing up in the active posts list.  We do not want that to happen.  It doesn't appear they can otherwise view, read, or post in the actual forums - the issue is only in the "view active posts" list, apparently.

From what you say above you could have identified the problem, "Active posts"

Just give this a try
ACP > FORUMS > select those forums you mention and see if ...

Display active topics:
If set to yes topics made to this forum will be shown in the active topics list.

....is set to yes, if it is set to no and it will not display in the active topics list.
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den

From the index page I am able to see "Privileged Concept" with the topics PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS USED IN PUBLIC, 90 days and 100 posts later! and Priviliged Section Guidelines from the privileged section - hidden only, am I right assuming the board staff lounge and the other private forums are in there too ? If so then those permissions are set correctly
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den
Post by: NoHumorMan on February 02, 2014, 08:17:13 AM
Display active topics is set to no in both of those sections.

When checking, then all the ones checked, even open forums, it still lists display active topics as set to no.

I sadly don't have time to check all sections of the forum, but if they are all set to no, why are they showing up in the active topics list at all?
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den

No, the two staff sections are up in the *Announcements & Feedback section*.

We have two privileged sections down in *Privileged Section - Hidden* as well as a admin only section called: *Archive*

Sorry, I didn't mentioned that they were announcements

Can you tell me what you have as in permissions for the "Privileged section- hidden" category please.

Easiest way to check is ...ACP > FORUMS > forum permissions > on the bottom one click on "Privileged section- hidden (+ subforums)"

select the user group registered user > by each of the listed sub forums click on advanced permissions, make sure each has the post tab open and take a screen shot for us.

I'm back.

I have now run through the list.  Both in all the parent forums and all the subforums and they are all listed as NO in the enable active topics option, so why it shows ANY topics in the active topics list is beyond me.  It shouldn't list any topics with these settings, so something is wrong.  Even the public sections of the forum is set to NO, but still show up in the active topics list.  phpBB-seo.com suggested a possible fix by resetting the software, but I have no clue how to do that or whether it would mess with the forum.  You can check out their suggestion of what to do on their support forum.

Hi, if you are ok till tomorrow I will recreate a similar scenario as yours on my test forum I have here and see if I can figure this out so those forum/subforum topics don't display in the active topics list.
Is there any chance you can make me an administrator so I can view how your permissions are set ?, its sometimes the quickest way if I can see what's going on first hand, you will just need to delete me from the admin group once I have done.

Ok I think I have found the problem, Guests have read only permissions for the categories that the subforums for those topics are in, although they have no access to its subforums its possible that they are seeing what the topics in the subforums are (due to the read only access) but not able to read or access them (due to no access)

Its worth you having a look at this and changing them one by one checking back all the time just in case that does not work.

I will pop back later to see if that has made any difference

But... does guest settings affect registered users settings?

I don't understand why the settings has to be this ridiculously complex.

I also don't understand why there are posts in the active topics list when we do NOT have that feature enabled on any of the forums or subforums.

I've been going through the forum settings like crazy.  Nothing in the settings seems wrong, so why we are having the issue of any posts showing up in active topics list when that feature isn't even enabled on any of our sections is just beyond me.  I really do not want to deal with phpbb-seo.com again.  They were slow to respond and not particularly helpful.
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den

Would still like to have the active topics list shut down.  Since it is not possible to block topic titles from sections of the forum people aren't supposed to see, I feel we need to completely stop the list from logging any posts.

Really hope we can get this fixed along with the other issues we are having.

We still haven't been able to figure out the reason why any topics even display in the active topics list, when we don't even have that feature enabled in our settings.  If we can't stop threads from hidden sections from showing up, hopefully we can stop all threads from all sections from showing up.  But how do we do that when the feature is already set at disabled?

We haven't received any screen caps of the issue or heard anything else of it since, so I'm hoping it is gone.

But we have been alerted to the registration notification e-mail not reaching people who sign up to the forum.  I was wondering whether it is a glitch that causes it to never be sent!?  The reports we get is that they do not get caught in spam filters or anything - they simply do not receive them.
We have the setting so that new members have to activate themselves.  We are currently unaware of how many are affected by this, but we'll start writing to new sign-up accounts to remind them to activate their accounts and hopefully the notification e-mail issue can be fixed. :)

He checked thoroughly and it wasn't there.  I have posted a notice about the gmail spam folder still taking out spam even when the spam filter is set to deactivated and where to find it to check, just in case others may have simply missed it.  We have a lot of new members who is still on the inactive list, so either they simply didn't activate their account when getting the notification e-mail (for various reasons), or, they simply didn't get the mail, either because it got swallowed by their spam filter or it was never sent.  We've had issues with regular notification mails not being sent from the forum in the past, so I was thinking it might be related and we've perhaps set our settings wrong.  I'll check with the other staff at the forum to check into this, and will get back with you.

What isp is your main email address set to on the forum?
Is it a yahoo.com or aol.com or hotmail.com

Somewhat recently those two isps have set a strong policy not to allow emails to be set by third parties. If that is the case I would suggest changing it to another email address.

I don't think it is any of those, but I'll check.

Yes, we were using a @yahoo.com mail as the forum mail.  We tried switching it to a @gmail.com one and it seems to be working again now.  Thanks.

Glad that helped! Yeah it was a very odd thing that yahoo did that broke a lot of mailing lists too.

We've had problems with mass e-mails too.  I'll try and see if this fixed those too, otherwise, is there any way to get those fixed as we can't let our members know when important things are happening, without having to write them individually, which is really a hassle when we have 1683 members.

Are currently having issues with the CAPTCHA code not working when people sign up.  They write down the code displayed, but get an error message.  Is there any way to fix that?

The error message was that they entered the wrong code, even though they didn't.  I've seen this error on various sites that use the CAPTCHA system, but it's always random so hard to detect and hard to fix, as far as I've heard.

I'm really sorry to keep bothering you but I accidentally deleted a user account when I was trying to change the username.  I know it states it cannot be undone, but is there a way to restore the user account or link a new account to that old deleted one?

Thanks a bunch for all your help with all my issues and problems.  Really appreciate it.

Hi again and happy new year.

When I go to this page on this thread I get a password notification from some weird site.

http://thepropden.aokforums.com/3-vt3452.html?start=30

Is it possible to check and see if it's been hacked and something embedded, so it can be removed so it doesn't interfere with our users.

Hi, we are getting an SQL error when trying to access the site.  I noticed the support forum was down for a short while too, but is back now.  Was it a general error affecting all or something more specific?

General Error

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.

Also, we never got an answer regarding our earlier inquiry.  Were you able to replicate the issue and thereby remove it or haven't you had a chance to check it out?

Sorry for the downtime. I changed server providers. I now own the servers. Should be faster overall new faster hard disks. Trying to beat the last bill at my old place so last minute.

The password issue is because a user posted an image to http://www.naijarules.com/vb/images/smilies/eplus2.gif which is causing the issue.

Thanks for the info.  I went into the posts and found the link and deleted it.

Good to hear it was nothing serious happening to the forums.

It seems though that we do no longer have permission to change the logo on our forum.  Will that be made available again?

Every time I reply to a topic I get this error notice:

*
Recoverable fatal error: Object of class template could not be converted to string in C:\echophp\freeforum.ca\web\includes\functions_messenger.php on line 196
*

But when checking the thread, the reply has been posted, so I don't understand why I get an error message.

Also... any news on the private message issue and the missing private messages?

EDIT: Just noticed that I am locked out of the administration control panel on the prop den forum.

I believe I fixed a bug in the administration control panel so should fix an error when you log into it.

I did some tests with private messages for an admin to user then moving to a folder the message can't seem to recreate the issue yet.

Trying to figure out the others.

I still can't access the admin control panel.  I am sent to a page with the following message instead:

*
Hosted by Freeforum.ca, get your free forum now! TOS | Support Forums | Report a violation
MultiForums powered by echoPHP phpBB MultiForums

So I have no admin access at all.

It also appears that several of our members are experiencing issues trying to log in, where nothing they do helps, such as switching browser or clearing the cache.  Is there a way I can forward login e-mail addresses of those affected to you in private?

Another issue that has been reported is that when posting pictures (I wasn't specified whether it was external or internal hosting), it does not show the picture on the forum, but only shows the URL for the picture or the word "image".  Can this be fixed, please, as we are a forum that relies heavily on pictures being shown.

Well, I got a screen capture of one of the posted images and how it looks on the forum.

Usually you could just post direct links and then simply have the [img] [/ img] brackets around the picture URL to show it on the forum, but now it just shows the URL.

Also, another member of our staff is trying to get access to this support forum, but he is caught by a captcha that won't let him pass, no matter how many times he tries.  He already has an account here, which may be the reason he can't get further, but could you please re-activate his account and send him a password reset link, so he can get back on, as I won't always be available if there are issues on our forum.  This is his profile: http://www.forummate.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=70181

Thanks nohumorman all sorted for my log in.

Regarding the images on the Prop Den, this hasn't worked for many days since I've tried.  It just shows the URL link as mentioned and no direct image.
Usually We just copy the link we want from the hosting site (photobucket), go to the prop den, paste the link, click on [Img] and it shows the image we want.  Can we please take care of this asap as people are posting images all the time and they don't want just the links.  Many thanks.

I am still getting this error message when posting replies to The Prop Den:

*
Recoverable fatal error: Object of class template could not be converted to string in C:\echophp\freeforum.ca\web\includes\functions_messenger.php on line 205
*

I do not get any error messages when posting a new topic.  Only when replying to topics.  I'll write down from now on which topics it happens in, in case it is a random error.

Also, similar to the issue with the private messages, it seems that the "active posts" list is also scrambled or sorted in a different way than newest/latest first.  The Private Messages are sorted by author instead of latest first.  We prefer latest first, so hope it can be changed back.  Also, any news on lost private messages.  Is there a way to recover them?

Posting images work.  Private messages and active topics are back to normal.  I still get this error message when posting a reply (the reply is posted, when I go back and check the thread, but the error message is kinda annoying).

*

I don't seem to be getting Recoverable fatal error: Object of class template could not be converted to string in C:\echophp\freeforum.ca\web\includes\functions_messenger.php on line 212 when replying to my test messages in my forum.  What options are checked when post a reply topic.
Title: Re: AOK Forum - The Prop Den
Post by: NoHumorMan on June 06, 2017, 10:50:27 AM
Of all the options listed only the following is checked in the list (marked by X)

   Disable BBCode
   Disable smilies
   Do not automatically parse URLs
X   Attach a signature (signatures can be altered via the UCP)
Notify me when a reply is posted
   Lock topic

So there really shouldn't be any issues.  Can you check if there is an issue with my account that may be connected with the admin control panel issue and the fact that I was locked out!?

Hi support.  I found an issue when checking out a topic a few days ago, but forgot to present it to you until now.

In post 6 in this thread for some reason the link posted won't actually show up as a link in the thread, but the link posted in post 8 in the same thread does.  I have tried to edit the link in post 6, but it still won't show up as a link.

This is the thread: http://thepropden.aokforums.com/darth-vader-anh-dome-mount-vt5214.html

And this is the link to the page that was linked to in post 6 that doesn't work: http://thepropden.aokforums.com/recently-found-anh-vader-vt2025.html

Also, I can see that the support forum doesn't abbreviate/shorten the links - is there a setting we can use on our forum that will do the same?

I didn't do any of those posts, a user did.  And I don't think anything different was done. Simply copy the link and post it in the post window and submit.

I've tried fixing the link, and while it works when I preview the post, it no longer shows up as a link when the post is submitted.  I've tried doing the same thing with pasting other links into posts and they work.  But for some reason this particular one doesn't.

Hello.  I made a mistake when wanting to change a member's username.  I deleted the account.  Is there a way to undelete it?  The account's posts were all retained, so I'm really hoping this is possible.

The account in question had the username: Mickxc

If there is no way to undo this, I understand.  Just thought I'd ask.

Okay, the member has signed up again - Vadernsons - http://thepropden.aokforums.com/vm3222.html

If there is a way to connect his account to the Mickxc deleted account I would really appreciate it.  I didn't save the link to the former account's profile page, so hope you can find it.  If it is not possible, please let me know.

EDIT: looked in my browser history and found the page.  Of course, when loading it, it no longer leads to the member page, but in case you need it for linking the accounts: Mickxc - http://thepropden.aokforums.com/vm2342.html

The issue still exists. It also happens when clicking on the arrow pointing to the paper to go directly to the latest post. The error page pops up. I find it annoying having to click on the thread and having to search for the new posts

I do not have this problem, so I cannot replicate the error.  I've just had others report the problem to me.  Maybe I may have messed up some user's settings.  I can make a post about it so all who experience it reports to me and then I can forward their account usernames, if that would work to fix this?

Yeah, I would try to get someone to copy the exact url of the link when they encounter it.

This is the error message URL from one of the users.  Don't know if they all get the same.

People are having trouble posting on the forum from their phones.  I don't use my phone when viewing the site so don't know how the mobile version works.  But there appears to be issues with the submit button.

Hi, and happy New Year.

When logging on just now I noticed the board background style - blue moon and ProVision Blue - is missing from the page.  At least they don't load for me, so the page looks really weird.

Thanks.  Now things look okay.  Any news on what could be the issue with the phone access to the forum?

So what would be the suggestion there?  To remove emoji's?

Also, had a question from a user:

Quote from: folkypatrol(guys, how do we add pictures to a post without it being a thumbnail ?)

I believe it used to show uploaded pictures to the forum as pictures a long time ago, and it does that in here, but is there a way to get it to do that again on my forum?

It would be to remove emoji's old version of phpBB i don't' believe the database types support it/not worth the risk to try to change the database type to allow it.

Might be a setting in the phpbb ACP?

Okay, there are a few different smily packs, but which would work well with phones?  Just the basic kind of smileys, nothing too big or fancy.  Similar to what we had, but which can run with current devices?

There are these to choose from on the list.  Are they any good?

HH.pak
Jzoner.pak
KOLOBOK.pak
Mypack.pak
Onion.pak
balkannet.pak
bcaforum.pak
board.pak
dl4all.pak
sample.pak

solider.pak
square.pak

So for phones to access and use the forum properly would it be smartest to just remove smileys then?

I would just avoid smilies that are too big! If they are small should work fine.

They are all small, but it seems they disrupt tapatalk and other ways for phones to successfully access and post on the forum.  So I guess it is best to just remove them and see if that fixes that issue.

Hi, been having trouble lately with a lot of spam accounts.  Is there any way to stop them other than just deleting them one by one when they make posts?

Thanks.

Just updated some of the spam checking code.
Found a mistake in the past for logging up blocked emails.
Added blocking of proxies, certain email domains that are spammy and some other spam detection methods.
Also forced max password length of 8

Hopefully some of these changes will help reduce the spam signups.

Thanks man.  Much appreciated.

Got a mail from a member of my forum concerning opening pm messages and getting an error message.  Here's the original message:

QuoteDear Whoever receives this email,

I received a notice that I had a PM at the 'Den (it went to my spam folder but I think that's an issue with my email) and when I click on the notification to open from the home page I get an error message.  I've attached a screencap.

Thank you!

Dave C  (dcarty)

And here's the screen capture he sent - just open in another window to enlarge if necessary:

See if it is better now. I am working on upgrading the forums. Focusing cleanup right now.

Thanks for the assistance.  I'll report back what the user experience when trying to access the pm section, whether it is fixed for him.  I asked him to perhaps remove the cookies and the cache pages for the forum if it doesn't work to see if that could clear the issue.

Cheers.
