Customer Feedback / Forum speed
January 02, 2009, 09:01:13 PM
I know I've not got my forum active properly just now, but it is so slow in loading it's painful.

At the moment, I have a very active forum (106 members, over 210,000 posts) but the host I am with has become exceptionally unreliable to the point that they've disappeared off the face of the earth.  I want to move all my members over to here but if the speed of loading that I've been experiencing just trying to set the forum up is anything to go by, they're going to complain to me a lot!

I'm absolutely loving the forum though - there are so many things to tinker with - far more than I've found on any other free forum and the support has been great so far.

It's just my speed.

Can anything be done about it please?

phpBB Support Forum / Posting problem
January 01, 2009, 09:05:26 AM
Thanks, but I still can't get it to work.

I've got my category set as "Chat" then I go on to do my forums, one of which is "Introductions" and I've got all my permissions set (as far as I know) for Admin, Registered Users, Bots and Guests but it still won't work and I'm getting that same message.

I've also noticed that my forum version isn't up to date - there are instructions on how to do it, but I reckon that it's not something I can do - could this be something to do with my posting problem.

I've checked and double checked all the permissions and everything is OK - it's only when you try to post that it won't let you.  It's also been running rather slow.  I'm in the process of sorting it all out so that I can move my members of my existing forum over but I'd like to get all this ironed out before I do.  Our present forum has loads of problems and I don't want to add more.

I'd be grateful for any help.

phpBB Support Forum / Posting problem
December 31, 2008, 01:33:04 PM
I had my forum all set up, but I found that no matter where you posted, all posts went into one forum category, so I thought I'd start again and redo all the categories.

Now I can't post at all.  If I try to post a new topic, I'm getting the following message:

You are not able to do posting operations on this forum due to the forum type not supporting it.

Does anyone know what's wrong?

phpBB Support Forum / Password on forum
December 31, 2008, 07:49:18 AM
When I try to set up the forum, I've got a bit that asks for my login and password which I don't want to have - how do I switch this off?

Also, when you post in one section, it's appearing in another and I think all the settings are right.

phpBB Support Forum / Uploading smilies please
December 28, 2008, 07:43:31 PM
I realise that this has probably been covered already and I apologise for asking the question again (just can't find the answer).

I would like to ask you to upload some smilies for me, but I just wanted to check exactly what you needed.

I have a folder which has .gif images in it (that's my smilies).  I can make a .pak file for them.

Do you need the folder with the smilies, plus the pak file?  If so, how do I send the pak file to you?

Also, do you need my forum url?

Many thanks for your time.

phpBB Support Forum / A few questions
September 28, 2008, 05:29:31 PM
I hope I'm posting this in the right section.

I have a couple of questions that I hope you don't mind answering.

Do you have any limits to the number of members or posts on a forum or the bandwidth allocated to forums?

If I had a backup file of my existing forum which is with another host, can I restore it to a freeforum.ca forum?  If I can't do that, is it something that Admin here would do?

When you backup a freeforum.ca forum, is this file valid to use on any other forum?

I notice on Server Configuration>Server Settings, the path settings are listed - does this mean that we can upload files ourselves?  Sorry if that's a silly question - still a bit new to all this and you have more functions than I've had to deal with up till now (no bad thing, by the way!)

Sorry for all the questions, and to let you understand, I presently have a forum set up with another free forum host.  Unfortunately, I didn't do the research that I should have done before setting it up and I think I might well be having problems - the free forum hosts appeared to have disappeared off the face of the earth!!

The reason I ask about backups is purely paranoia now that I wouldn't want to lose my forum - it's quite large and very busy (195,000 posts to date) and no offense to you guys, but I'd like to know that I could salvage something should everything go belly up.

Many thanks for your help and patience with all my questions,

Alison
