Just login in your account on the new forum and try to upload an avatar.
Make sure phpbb settings that avatar uploads are allowed.

I would keep the same url and just changing out. So the normal PHPBB is not fixing any issues? If that is the case i guess no reason to change anything and just leave it as is...

I have not installed the style on that version. I want to see if this is acceptable.

I see some issues with keeping topic urls will see if there is a plugin with the new phpBB version

That feature is included in the forums so should be ok.
