how can i disable registration in my forum?

We need to be able to disable registration in our forum for a few days because of abuse our sister sites have been taking. is there any way we can do this and still allow our current members to post? how do we allow people to register again once the abuse dies down? if we cant take out the registration without hindering the use of the forum, what would be the best course of action? in need help asap because the abuse is only going to get worse as time goes on, and we would like a place for our members to go without feeling threatened.
