I think there is a way to help you customize these icon.
I'm not sure about it but we should try.
Which default template you're using?
I'll upload these image you suggested into that style folder.
Then, you can edit imageset (ACP > STYLES > Imagessets):

• Just choose your style to edit
• At "Select image" combo-box, select "Forum new posts"
• At the second group-set "Image", choose the other image you want to replace.
• Press submit and check it again.

Just change the icon you want with these icons:
